Well, a bit of apology from me, perhaps. When I sent out the word,
Pierre noted that he knew the word "nopal", but not "nopalry", so that
gave me pause. Then, when two nearly identical definitions came in
based on that root word, I considered pulling it and submitting
something different, but I let it go. For those who may not know
"nopal", it's a cactus, specifically prickly pear, and the red fruit
that it produces is known as "tuna" (so Elliott, it was really four
cactus defs and only one fish def). I also though there might be
something in there about avoiding opals because they're unlucky, but
there wasn't. Anyway, we had more submitters than voters this time, for
whatever reason. Votes-wise, it's a tie between Pierre and Elliott,
however, since Pierre fooled Elliott but not vice versa, I'll give the
nod to Pierre, assuming he wants it.
General comments:
Linda: Lots of cactus defs, as was my first thought, so probably not.
Pierre: Lots of cactus defs (expected) and arts and crafts defs (not
expected).
Elliott: Three cactus defs. What's with that? I suppose they'll tell
us. Two fish defs, but of course any weird word sounds fishy. And as
far as I can tell, none of the defs were based on the word ``pal''.
nopalry - n. - a futures contract for tuna fruit.
by Pierre. Fran 2, Elliott 2 = 4 points.
Linda: And tuna fruit?????
Fran: made me laugh. You can tune a piano but you can tuna fruit?
Elliott: Came closest to making me laugh. What on earth would tuna fruit be?
nopalry - n. - the Sonoran art of dried cactus carving.
by Nicolas. No points.
nopalry - n. - pedomancy; divination by asking a small child.
by Elliott. Linda 1, David 2, Fran 1 = 4 points.
Linda: One point for the small child leading them, as the saying goes.
nopalry - n. - at royal festivities, adulation given to lesser nobility.
by Josh (no, not that Josh, a new Josh). No points.
Linda: Why would the royals salute the less noble except to keep them
happy and not revolting????
nopalry - n. (Cheshire dial.) - the art of thatching huts with fish bones .
by David. No points.
Linda: What's with thatching with fish bones??? How would that work???
Elliott: Seems like the scales would make better roofing material,
somehow. Maybe you could thatch with the bones, then cover over the
thatch with the scales, then sleep in a tent upwind of the house.
nopalry - n. - the art of marking even gradations on measurement tools.
by Fran. Linda 2, Pierre 1 = 3 points.
Linda: Two points for the gradations on measurement tools, for some
reason, in honor of two friends who retired from the Nat'l Bureau of
Weights and Measures and who are probably laughing at my choice.
nopalry - n. - decorative crafts made from dried cactus, carved and
painted.
by Ranjit. No points.
nopalry - n. - the art of making noodles out of vegetables using a
spiral cutter.
by Linda. Elliott 1 = 1 point.
Linda: PS I have one of those spiral cutters but heck if I can get it
to make noodles out of even as soft a fruit as zucchini, never mind a
winter squash.
Elliott: Sounds a bit like ``potetoruneedo'', which is what you get when
you do that to a potato.
nopalry - n. - in heraldry, a decorative border that recapitulates the
primary motif.
by Jacob. David 1, Pierre 2 = 3 points.
nopalry - n. - a plantation of nopal cactus for raising the cochineal
insect, from which the natural dye carmine is derived.
by various online dictionaries. No votes.
Linda: BTW, isn't the cochineal animal a sea creature???
Jean-Joseph: So yeah, it's just a cactus orchard. But I found it
interesting that it's specifically a cactus orchard that's used as a bug
ranch.
And regarding the definitions sent by Nicolas and Ranjit, one of the
first images you get when you Google "nopal" is:
