[Fictionary] MAHONIA RESULTS

Wow! I'd never even heard of Oregon grapes despite relatives on the West Coast.  And I often vote for scientific defs, by the way.  When I was thinking of a def for mahonia, I was thinking of the cocobolo --sp?--tree of Central and S.America.  When our family went to Costa Rica to visit friends----I'd tutored two of their 4 kids in English when the dad was getting a degree in Animal Science at URI--we bought many lovely items made of this wood.  That was 1978, I think, before Costa Rica was a touristy place or eco-destination.  Our total of 7 kids got along famously, and our friends showed us the whole country in 10 days, and we swam in both very warm oceans.  Biggest problem?  Staying hydrated on their West Coast--cacti grow right along the shore.  Next big problem was not being able to use credit cards and almost not being able to leave the country from lack of airport exit fees in cash. Surprise!   Actually, we did leave and ran  our of food money.  But had to share a small amount of food in Miami on the way home.  Linda

Apparently since there have been cichlids and upside-down catfish together in 
East African lakes. It's called a cuckoo catfish, and it lays eggs among the 
cichlid eggs. The catfish eggs hatch first and proceed to eat the cichlid 
eggs, resulting in a few fry catfish, instead of many fry cichlids, peeking 
out of the mother cichlid's mouth.
