as in these (abbreviated) examples:

propitious, 1447. [a. OF. propicius, -eux, f. L. propitius see -OUS]  1.
Disposed to be favorable.  2. Presenting favorable condiditons 1601.

shower, [OE scur : - OTeut. *skuroz.] 1. A fall of rain, of short duration
