GNU was originally designed to run on the Hurd kernel, but is more commonly run
on the Linux kernel. Hurd stands for Hird of Unix-Replacing Daemons, where Hird
stands for Hurd of Interfacies Representing Depth. Hurd and bast are parts of
fibrous plant stems.
