Actually, I was reminded of my friend Ruthie's family history: her parents met while both were using assumed names.  The dad was Jewish and working for a German chemical co.  (he used the name of a deceased German-sounding classmate) during/slightly after the Depression, and the mom's divorce had not come through yet, but she used her maiden name anyway.  The kids evidently heard all the family secrets while playing behind couches or under tables--or through the registers.  Linda
