So, what exactly is a heald?

Hey, guys, it always seems as if I am fooled the most by things I am familiar with. As a person who has done a lot of weaving with heddles  (on my looms, they are the metal [or string] holders for the individual threads, that are used because it is easier to make patterns if you separate the threads--which can be lifted up when you stomp on the various treadles--in this way).  I guess I just don't know the various slang words for heddles and other weaving stuff from other areas.  Just the local names  (and perhaps Scandinvian ones from the influence of my teacher). Linda
