HI, All, I'm getting duplicates on everything from you guys, so maybe I'm still on the plover list??? Better two than none, I always say... As for Baba Yaga, I remember her stories in Jack and Jill magazine when I was a kid, She lived in a house with feet, as Ranjit noted (I keep hoping I'll make some cement feet in front of my art workshop, but not yet) and rode around in a mortar and pestle, so I imagined her with a young asst. who maybe ran errands and swept up and sometimes went on adventures. As for the connection between Russian and oceanography: at the time my husband was studying oceanography (1962-6), he was told to study Russian language as well, for that was the language of research at the time. He took 6 years of Russian, actually starting in high school, but could not get into a limited number of spaces in grad school (only 30 in the country, all for biologists, and him with a degree in geology, and so he was drafted into the Army)(those who did get in back then saw grants run out, and so they changed careers). 1966 was way before Jacques Cousteau, Bob Ballard, and oil rigs. Linda
