The problem with using shoes to signify social standing (as I learned 
many years ago from the story of the Chief Sage of Chelm), is that they 
quickly get very dirty, and it's hard to tell who's wearing the special 
shoes. Nevertheless, I like this enough to give it 1 point. -Joe

This is, in fact, true: the distinction is wearing shoes vs. not wearing 
shoes, lying about vs. tromping all over the place.  It's just that 
"salep" has nothing to do with the concept, per se.
