Fran, I had recalled the word "Jalap" from an old herbal and medical journal a friend was transcribing. So, I looked it up in my own old herbal to find that Jalap is several things. 1) It's poke, or Phytolacca decantra, that grows wild around here (RI). I have boiled and eaten the unopened shoots in the spring--tastes like asparagus. It has purple berries that could be used as dye, if anyone could figure out how to fix it. There are many other uses, mostly emetic and cathartic, with a slow narcotic mixed in. Otherwise, it can be dangerous and poisonous in too large quantities. Some animals eat it to no bad effect, and others may die, who knows? Some have used it to soothe the pain of cancer tumors. Or arthritis (swallow the berry and seed whole). 2) An Asian plant called Turpeth???? 3) Wild convolvulus or bindweed, and possibly a type of wild sweet potato. Linda PS Disclaimer: Before using any of these things, read up on them, identify them carefully and take your chances.
