Well, thank you all a lot!  In particular, I think "hideous plausibility" may be the nicest thing anyone has ever said about my writing (although of course the famous "seldom tedious" -- not that that was meant just for me -- is up there).

New word: anybody know "dap"?  (Note: I don't mean the maker of caulk, of course, nor do I mean the slang term for fist-bumps and other such hand greetings.  This is an English word from the American Heritage dictionary.)
