[Fictionary] Please define the new word!

HI, Despite a last minute surge of memory by Pierre, who eliminated all but two of the possibilities, we have a new word!  Please define "aver", n.  The last round was fun because we had to include pronunciation and possibly a derivation, so please include those, too. You may use dictionaryese or a less formal def.
