I'd understood that they were a good non-capital-intensive source of 
protein that can eat table scraps.  And still eaten, see for instance 
here: http://pastoturista.galeon.com/pasto.html with potatoes and a 
little salad.

Our piggies, though, eat pricey high-vitamin-C guinea pig chow, 
pricey hay in plastic bags, and only pay their way in squeaking and 
looking cute.
