MY guinea pigs lived to be very old--Wiggy at least nine. His favorite food was romaine leaves, and I got a week's supply at a market in their back room--a big boxful I kept in the cellar fridge. Wiggy squeaked every time he heard me open the door to that fridge, and took to squeaking if I even opened the cellar door. His girlfriend Nutmeg arrived when Wiggy was quite old, and as he lay dying of a stroke, she wailed and squeaked so bad, became morose, and died a few weeks later, even though she was only 3 and 1/2. Linda PS I filled the cage with hay after I cleaned it, and they loved to make tunnels.

I'd understood that they were a good non-capital-intensive source of
protein that can eat table scraps. And still eaten, see for instance
here: http://pastoturista.galeon.com/pasto.html with potatoes and a
little salad.

Our piggies, though, eat pricey high-vitamin-C guinea pig chow,
pricey hay in plastic bags, and only pay their way in squeaking and
looking cute.
