1) Maqui, n. Fermented mango juice, used ceremonially.
Maquis, n. A Tahitian religious leader.
2) Maqui, n. The wire screen used in making rag paper.
Maquis, adj. Matte; dull and flat.
3) Maqui, n. Thick bush country in the south of France, named for the nutritious berry that grows there.
Maquis, n. Hence, the French Resistance that hid out there in WWII.

Note: Wayampi straddles the French Guiana/ Brazil border. The tree called “jatobá” in Portuguese is called “courbaril” in French and botany (and “guapinol” in Spanish.)
