Sorry for the delay, but I am finally feeling a bit better from the flu.  I hear it goes on and on….  I’m also sorry that several people claim they never received an announcement of the word(s) before the ballot, and later, several others claimed they already knew the word, esp after Nicolas had a similar def in mind (since I am not a Trekkie, I had no idea it was “True”). I suppose I should not have included it on the ballot, but figured it would be a red herring for those who never vote for two similar defs.  Ah me, what a tangled web we weave….  Now, for the votes!  Linda
1)	Maqui, n. Fermented mango juice, used ceremonially. 
       Maquis, n. A Tahitian religious leader.
Nicolas, 0 points for def and 2 points for correct guess=2.
2)	Maqui, n.  The wire screen used in making rag paper. 
Maquis, adj. Matte; dull and flat.
Eric, 3 points (2 from Ranjit and 1 from Elliott) for def=3. Pierre thinks it is similar to fourdinière, a paper making machine.  [I make hand-made paper and call the screen a screen and the edger a deckle-maker.  Linda].
3)	Maqui, n.  Thick bush country in the south of France, named for the nutritious berry that grows there.

Maquis, n.  Hence, the French Resistance that hid out there in WWII.
The real definition, found in Wish Me Luck, the Acorn Media DVD series about British Spies in WWII and confirmed in Wikipedia.  Maqui berries and juice are advertised as health foods.  7 points (2-Jim, 2-Nicolas, 1-Ranjit, and 2, JC Ravage).  Tied for first place.

4)	Maqui, n.  [Wayampi maki] A love potion made from the sap of the jatobá tree.

Maquis, n.  A canoe made from the truck of the courbaril, used by indigenous peoples in French Guiana.  

Note: Wayampi straddles the French Guiana/ Brazil border. The tree called “jatobá” in Portuguese is called “courbaril” in French and botany (and “guapinol” in Spanish.)

5)	Maqui, n. A pitchfork used as a griddle.
Maquis, n.  Parallel welts found on the belly and thighs of accordion players.
Elliott, 2 points from Pierre=2, [and from me: the Uncle Buck Award for the pitchfork griddle, and come to think of it, also the accordion marks—Linda].
6)	Maqui, n.  (also called mockee or mocky).  A logo or badge on the grill, tail, etc. of an automobile, placed there by the dealer.
Maquis, n.  A coat-of-arms of one of Les Deux-Cents, the two hundred and six registered noble families of France.
Ranjit, 6 points for def (2-Eric, 2-Elliott, 1-Pierre, and 1-JC Ravage) plus 1 point for the correct definition=7!  You are the real winner!  Congratulations!  New Word, please! 7)	Maqui, n. [Rhode Island dial fr. Portuguese]  A freemartin.
Maquis, n. [Rhode Island dial, fr. Portuguese]  A cross-dresser.
David Randall, 1 from Jim=1.  [By the way, RI really does have a large Portuguese-American population, almost as large as the Italian-Americans.  There are more Rhode Islanders whose ancestors came from the Azores than there are people left in the Azores.  Many also came from Cape Verde.  As for the influx of delicious foods, all I can say is YUM!   Linda]

Extra def from Nicolas:  The Maquis are a faction of armed Federation citizens operating in the Demilitarized Zone in the border with Cardassian Space.  This def was withdrawn because “People would know it’s me.”  [Sorry this was confusing, but there you go!
