>pannage, n. The proportion of energy that may be extracted, at a given
>location, by a fall-type water wheel (a breast-shot, overshot, or
>backshot wheel).

To be clear, "fall-type water wheel" is a term I made up.

Breast-shot, overshot, and backshot wheels, unlike undershot wheels,
all extract some potential energy from the water (as it loses
height); but there doesn't seem to be a word for this division of
turbines.

(Breast-shot, overshot, backshot, *and* undershot water wheels are
all *impulse-type* water turbines, as they extract kinetic energy
from moving water; but much more sophisticated turbines, such as the
Pelton wheel, are also impulse turbines.)
