This sounds very much like something I read in the New Games Book. First you
put a ball in a sock (this is called a "smeltz" or some similar word), then
you tie it on the end of a rope (the rope and ball together are called
a "bola", and there's a bola spider which takes its name from this), then you
swing the bola in a large circle and people jump over it as it passes by.
