In the end, the garbage hole disposed of the adjective to claim the
victory! Lead us from the castle's kitchen to a new word, Jim!

-Joe

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

fliffis, n. - The distinctive duff unique to the forests of the Siwalik hills. Often 25-50 cm. in depth, this cover is caused by the copious year-round foliage drop of the sal tree.
Eric - 7 POINTS (Linda: 1, J-J: 2, Pierre: 2, Elliott: 2)
Nick: Delightfully specific.
Hutch: The duff or the molasses? Duff takes my imaginary tie-breaker point.
Elliott: I like it! Even though I've never heard of the sal tree. There are lots of tree species I've never heard of. Most of them, in fact. Two points.

fliffis, n. - A bucket of molasses suspended over a stream, used as a folk method of mosquito control.
J-J - 1 POINT (Hutch: 1)
Jim: Is the idea that it gets them drunk, and then they can't fly properly and drown? That's the only reason I see a need for it to be over a river. Honorable mention.
Nick: Would that work?
Hutch: The duff or the molasses? 1 point
Elliott: ``I know! If we attract enough ants, the mosquitoes will bite them and not us!'' I've seen plastic bags of water hung up on patios, supposedly also as a mosquito repellent.

fliffis, n. (Br. Army slang, fr. Arabic salafi) - an Islamic zealot.
David - 2 POINTS (Correct vote: 2)
Nick: I've always heard "hajji" for this, but maybe that's American only?
Hutch: Don't think so. British military slang *tends* to be pretty close to the original language's word; though often changing the meaning drastically. "salafi" --> "fliffis" just seems too big of a change.

fliffis, adj. - In food tasting (also wine, coffee etc), a pleasant but unknown flavor or aroma note
Hutch - 8 POINTS (Ellen: 1, Jim: 1, Ranjit: 1, Nick: 2, Amy: 2, J-J: 1)
Jim: 1 point, partly for the bravado of making it an adjective.
Ranjit: 1 point for daring to adjective!
Nick: 2 points. Sounds sufficiently snobby/obscure.
Elliott: Hmmm. That's a meaning in need of a label, for sure. But I'm out of points.

fliffis, n. - A disposal hole leading from a castle's kitchen to its moat.
Jim - 10 POINTS (Ellen: 2, Nick: 1, David: 1, Hutch: 2, Amy: 1, Pierre: 1, Correct vote:
2)
Nick: There's probably a word for this that I'm forgetting, but this seems believable. 1 point.
Hutch: I keep coming back here: 2 points
Pierre: One point for making me think of how David conquered the Jebusites.
Elliott: The medievals could be icky, but wouldn't dumping garbage in the moat reduce its military value?

fliffis, n. - 1. The edge of a shadow cast by the full moon. 2. The border between the human and faerie worlds.
Nick - 3 POINTS (Ranjit: 2, Eric: 1)
Jim: I could only see the edge of a moonshadow needing a distinctive name if a moonshadow were different from a sunshadow, for instance being more gradual/feathered. But since the Sun and Moon are the same angular size, shadows from both ought to be identical in sharpness. Sorry, the astronomer in my can give this no points.
Ranjit: I'm a sucker for metaphorically-linked double defs. 2 points.
Hutch: I would expect such a word to be Gaelic in origin and this just doesn't feel Gaelic.
Eric: One point. Because it makes me think of that ridiculous book by Wen Spencer in which the border between our world and Faerie is, in fact, Pittsburgh.
Elliott: I like the conjunction of ideas, but ``fliffis'' just doesn't sound eldrich enough for that.

fliffis, n. - A twisting double somersault performed on the trampoline. also fliffus.
Merriam-Webster - (Jim: 2, David: 2, Linda: 2)
Jim: Know thy judge" says 2 points, since Joe's facebook picture shows him on a trapeze. (Editor's note: Well, maybe, except I didn't know this word until I started hunting for weird words, so that's just a coincidence.)
Nick: I imagine this would be the same as the equivalent snowboarding term?
Hutch: If this had a (moderately believable) origin, I could vote for it, but
no.

Fliffis, n. - da cutest widdle kitty cat in da whole world! C'mere, Fliffis! Who's a good kitty?
Ranjit - 2 POINTS (Eric: 2)
Nick: Hahahaha!
Hutch: *LMAO* Somebody doesn't want the next round
Eric: I say this every round, but really, this time, *none* of them is plausible. Thus, two for the cute kitty. Because who doesn't love kitties?

fliffis, n. - A rumba step consisting of lots of shaking of the ruffled rumba skirt. Made popular by Cuban dancing champion Fiona Fliffis.
Linda - 2 POINTS (Correct vote: 2)
Nick: Doesn't sound Cuban?
Hutch: Dunno: a step that is not a "step". Don't think so

fliffis, n. (Balnibarbian, related to Luggnaggian fluft, tongue, referring to the lure) - The Balnibarbian monkfish, Lophius maldonaticus.
Pierre - 1 POINT (Elliott: 1)
Nick: gulliver++
Hutch: Isn't "Balnibarbi" or "Balnibarb" one of the countries from _Gulliver's Travels_? Been a long time since I've read it.
Elliott: ``Fliffis'' does have that Lilliputian ring to it. One point.

------------
General comments:
Linda: I was hoping to vote for the foliage drop of the Truffula trees, but I couldn't find it among the defs. So, I will go with the twisting double somersault for 2 points and 1 point for the (probably imaginary) forest duff , although the moat refuse hole appealed for some reason. Hope the widdle kitty is happy.
Hutch: I just can't believe ANY of these fictionitions! *LOL*
Pierre: These are all quite unbelievable!
