There are definitely times when certain people really just shouldn't bother
getting out of bed. I coulda swore I had prepared this and sent it off last
week, but I can't find the file and I definitely DIDN'T send anything.

Anyway, the real definition won, so I'll just pick another ... [shut him up
/ drag 'em off stage / get a rope!] or perhaps not :-D

In reality, we have a tie for the lead between David Randall and J-J Cote.
However, David's stuffed the ballot box with his "Inspirational Poem"
included below, so I declare David Randall the winner.

Linda's note echoes my opinion. Eric's "power noise" from "the California
proto-punk movement" is without a doubt one of the most original
fictionitions we've had in a long time! Kudos, sir!!!

BB,
Hutch

fictioneric, 2 ("Well, that's a real definition of 'jack', one I
deliberately steered clear of because I thought it was one of the known
ones we were supposed to ignore. So unless someone's being sneaky, these
are the real defs. I won't vote for them, since knowing one seems like
cheating." Ed. Note: This was definitely NOT one of the 'known' definitions
to ignore; although he disclaimed it because of 'knowing' [one of] the
correct definitions, I gave it to him as a correct guess anyway.)

jack - v - [fr. Malay] - to dive for pearls
jamb - n - [fr. Malay] - a black pearl
jaseran - n - [fr. Malay] a pearl thief

fragrance and make it smoulder.

jack - n - A smooth stone disk fastened to a piling of a jaseran to keep

jamb - v - To soak a cigar in dilute ether in order to tighten the wrapper.
jaseran - n - A humidor with a clockwork mechanism to slowly roll the cigars
by Jean-Joseph Cote -- 5 (including 2 point correct guess)
Nicholas Ward, 2 ("2 points for medieval simplicity")
fictioneric, 1 ("One point because I like my cigarettes jambed. Aficionados
use a jaseran to evenly distribute the ether in newly-jambed cigars; the
traditional clockwork device was used to prevent the danger of fire from
sparking in ether vapor, attendant upon the use of early electric motors.
Nowadays, cheap battery-powered jaserans are used by hoi polloi.")

jack - n - The inner bark layers of a Stone pine (Pinus pinea).
jamb - n - The outer bark layers of a Stone pine (Pinus pinea).
jaseran - n - A style of chair popular in Moorish Spain whose seat is
formed from overlapping jack and jamb.
by Nicolas Ward -- 3
Linda Owens, 2
Pierre Abbat, 1 ("One travished point." Ed Note: Was "travished" an old
fictionary word? Whazzit mean?)

jack - n - Genre of power noise music developed in the 1970s as an
outgrowth of the California proto-punk movement.
jamb - n - A breadboarded RC (resistive-capacitative) unit used to
customize or distort the sound of early Ampex multitrack recorders,
repopularized in the retro-noise esthetic of the 1990s.
Jaseran - - styled lowercase jaseran: Mononym of keyboardist and recording
engineer Jason Emkanian, best known for his avant-garde and noise rock work
at Grey-Grey-Grey recording studio in Modesto, California, circa 1995-2005.
fictioneric -- 4 (including 2 point correct guess)
Ranjit Bhatnagar, 2
Nicholas Ward ("Hehe retronoise")
Linda Ward ("Honorable mention to the CA music stuff. I'd believe anything
about CA, even though one of my sons lives there and is quite traditional.")

An Inspirational Poem
by David Randall

Jack found himself in a terrible Jamb,
Helpless before the Iamb that Iamb;
"Jaseran!" swore he. "By Jimbo! By Gee!
Jumpin' Jehosophat! Fiddle-dee-dee!"
But swearing was futile, and finally Jack
Was et by the Iamb, with Jamb, for a snack.

[Ed. Note: When I got it, I thought that some/all of the "Iamb"s (capital
"i") were "lambs" (lower-case "L"). The picture of Jack being eaten by a
baby sheep had me giggling uncontrollably for quite a while!)
