HI, all, been away from my computer for a while--return of the bad back, but it's getting better. Anyway, when I was a kid, I got a cartooning book out of the library that said crottles were the crosses on the eyes of unconscious figures. As an adult, I can't find this book or a cartooning or other reference to crottles as anything but some sort of fungus or lichen. LInda

Forgot to mention: Geosiphon (and there's no G. khasiana, only G. pyriformis)
is a fungus that lives in symbiosis with a cyanobacterium, but is not
considered a lichen, for two reasons: the cyanobacterium cells are inside, not
between, the fungus cells, and it belongs to a different division than the
lichens, which are all ascos or basidios.
