I was thinking of a homemade bolus, which is a tricky covering of a pill for animals, such as putting a heartworm pill in a bit of hamburger for a dog, or hiding a worm pill in something sweet, like molasses, bread, and/ or carrots for a horse or goat. Few of these tricks work if the animal gets them on a daily or weekly basis, or if you act suspiciously, and they tend to spit them out, often hiding the pill, not the coating, in their mouths until you are not looking. I found it easier to merely crush the pill into their daily food and hope for the best. And I used a paste wormer for my horse. I had one cat that used to run away from a trick pill or shot until once the vet chased him upstairs and into the tiled bath where there was no escape, so he gave up. After that we just corralled him in the bath and did what had to be done, but we also wore gloves and carried a thick towel, as he was feral and did not like to be picked up or he would shred your arms. I hope this was helpful. BTW most of our animals lived to be very old and currently our goats are over 150 years old in dog years, as are two old Muscovy drakes. OR it may be from living in the country. Our neighbors swore that all the dogs were so healthy because they "ate their vegetables" i.e. my horse's droppings. LInda PS My goats and ducks do not like gherkins but don't mind leftover salad with a bit of oil and vinegar.

Well, I am computerized again ... and re-discovering why I hate Microsoft and really, truly, and deeply despise Windows 10. With luck I'll be able to switch to Unix. Regarding the results: first, my abject apologies to Linda and J-J. I left their definitions out of the ballot. I had not even seen Linda's definition until today, but I had actually SEEN J-J's and missed getting it into the ballot. Even worse, J-J included a great joke definition (which, I must admit, I didn't actually get until today while writing this email). homerkin- n. - dough covering a pill to make it go down better.
Linda Owens homerkin - n - A drinking vessel made from part of an animal such as ram or rhinoceros horn, or whale tooth.
homerkin - n - [joke def] a sweet pickle that you made yourself.
Jean-Joseph Cote Speaking of joke definitions, Pierre's very first response to the word was ... I have never heard of a homerkin, but given that it has something to do with ingesting, I have a suspicion that I saw a platter of homerkins at a Chinese restaurant last night. As they are decapod crustaceans and have neither fins nor scales, I did not eat them. Instead I ate chicken with broccoli and rice, after ascertaining that there is no meat in the rice. (The Chinese default meat is pork.) My response to him generated lessons in kashrut and in gender in Romance languages. :-D On to the actual results: Several people saw the connection of Homer Simpson and beer, either in their definitions or in their votes. I had expected it to turn people off from the "old beer measure" that is the real definition. Worked in at least one case: Ranjit said no to it with a comment of "Homer Simpson!" But the real definition ALMOST won the voting. Results: In third place: Demonstrating the appeal of humorous definitions, David's "leprechaun's lunchbox" had a solid 4 points. In second place: Showing the failure of my assumption that nobody would vote for the obvious, the actual definition of the old beer measure gained 5 points. AND THE WINNER, BY A NOSE: with 6 points, including two points for a correct guess, Nicolas Ward's "standardized container". Take it away, Nicolas!!! ---------- homerkin - n - A container of identical size to another, used as a measure of volume under the Winchester Standards to ensure fair liquor sales.
