A while back I tutored an adult guy in English Literacy who enjoyed hunting. He was at about third grade level, so I found a book on hunting, including tanning of deer hides. The Indian tribes wasted nothing, so after scraping off the hairs, they processed the leather with mashed brains and urine, then hung it up to dry. . Smoking the hide then produced very soft buckskin. I hope i have the order right. I have helped to make a full-sized replica Sioux Tipi, and cooked many NA meals over an open fire, but never made leather. Oh, this was a year-long project with my husband's Boy Scout troop, with lots of research, whole families participated, and the Tipi won several awards. .Some said that Indian Lore Merit Badge was harder to earn than Eagle Scout. It was probably about 15-20 years ago and the various parts of the Tipi may be in good enough condition to use again. David and I slept out in it one January and were toasty warm in our sleeping bags. I remember hearing a great horned owl right here in RI. LINda

Good heaven, I'm so sorry this is so late.
This round's winner is Nicolas, with 20 points, primarily for his very
popular defs about pillow manufacturing and a pottery finish.
Other proud fictioneers -- David 5, Jean-Joseph 11, Linda 6, Pierre 7,
Ranjit 3.
Linda: Too many defs of time, approx lengths and hemp~
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
bhangmeter, n. A device for remotely detecting and measuring the
yield of an atomic explosion.
Dictionary def.

Pierre 2, Jean-Joseph 1.
Eric: Wikipedia has this one. Yes, it really has to do with
both "bang" as in bang, and "bhang" as in weed. From the days
back when U.S. government physicists could make jokes about
marijuana.
Jean-Joseph: Well, you never know, one point. Ironically, when
I was an undergraduate, there was a well-known story about a
member of the rocket research society who made a mistake in
preparing a batch of propellant (I forget the designation, but
it was similar stuff to what was used in the SRBs of the Space
Shuttle), and he blew the door off of the blast chamber when he
tested it. His name is Hyong Bang. True story.
bhangmeter, n. A blood test for narcotics
David

Hutch 1.
Hutch: connected to hemp?
bhangmeter, n. An Indian stew made with hemp leaves and peas in a red
curry sauce.
Pierre
Total: 4.
Jean-Joseph 2, Hutch 2.
Jean-Joseph: "-meter", hmm, I don't know, but what the heck,
two points.
Hutch: I know that "bhang" is an Indian 'chaw' of hemp leaves:
2 points
bhangmeter, n. A device consisting of a shallow ramp used to measure
the speed of a billiard table by rolling a cue ball down it and
observing the distance that it travels before stopping.
Jean-Joseph
Total: 3
David 2, Linda 1.
Pierre: What do you mean by the speed of a billiard table?
Jean-Joseph: Mine, and obvious parody of the real device
"stimpmeter".
bhangmeter, n. An approximate unit of length, roughly 90 to 115 cm.
Ranjit

David, 1.
bhangmeter, n. A pole or similar marker used for recording high water
marks.
Nicolas
Total: 4
Ranjit 2, Linda 2.
Pierre: I've sat through the PDH seminar on recording high
water marks and never heard of this term.
A few months ago there was a flood over much of North Carolina
and they asked all surveyors who'd taken the high water mark
seminar to record them. I traveled my usual route to Asheville,
much of which runs beside a creek, and saw no evidence of
flooding. I guess I'm too close to the mountains.
bhangmeter, n. A Bollywood rating system.

Pierre 1, Ranjit 1.

corsned
Hutch: Completely at sea here. WAG time!!!
Eric: folks sure loved that pillow stitch!
corsned, n. A type of trial by ordeal in which the accused was
required to eat a piece of barley bread and cheese.
Dictionary def.
Total: 2
David 2.
Pierre: Doesn't sound like much of an ordeal.
Eric: Also known as the "morsel of execration", how could that
phrase be any better? The idea isn't that the accused might not
like barley bread and cheese, but that the priest first writes
the Lord's Prayer on the bread. See also Numbers 5:11ff.

Jean-Joseph 1.
Ranjit: 0 points but special appreciation award

puering
Hutch: "puerile" means "young" or "immature" ... but it looks
like most people looked that up and came up with a fictionition
along that line. Back to a WAG again
Eric: This time folks liked the pottery finish and the
appearance of seven stars. Credit to Linda for being the only
one to choose the real def.
puering, v. In tanning, the process of soaking skins in an infusion of
canine faeces.
Dictionary def.

Linda, 1.
Ranjit: This is why dogs' butts are so puerile. (Sorry!)

puering, n. A seven course meal of lamb, veal, and other baby animals.

Jean-Joseph: I have linguistic aversions to all the rest of
these, including this one, but I can't really throw away my
remaining vote, so it goes to this too-obvious one.
puering, n. A smoke signal sent by Pope Pius's father using a pipe.
Pierre

puering, n. An approximate unit of circumference, roughly 750 to 900
cm.

Jean-Joseph: Interesting notion, being as how circumference is
measured in length. It did make me think about how a circle
one foot in diameter has a circumference of about a meter.
