Fictioneers --
Pierre knows "hurd", which is close enough, though I've only seen it
as an obligatory plural. I first saw hurds in this folktale,
http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/grimm156.html
as linked from this http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/folktexts.html lovely collection.
Hurds are either hard or rough bits in hemp being spun into fiber, or
the softer inner portion of hemp or similar stalks.
My plan B had been "chevelure", but I bet you all know that word, don't you.
So the new new word is
hatchment
Definitions are due in a week, by close of business Wednesday, 12
September 2007. Or, if you know the word, let me know in the next
two days.
The haiku request no longer applies, "hatchment" somehow doesn't seem
very haikuey.
Enjoy!
