Yes, I was thinnking of the subcontinent in my menial-servant def. Anyone ever see Bride and Prejudice? Highly recommended for all sorts of reasons--humor, dances, foods, music, costumes, characters, menial servants, and similarity to Pride and Prejudice. Linda

The final ballot received pushed the soup past the loofah gleanings. And everybody got points. It's all yours, Ranjit!

Jim: "I like a lot of these definitions; congratulations all around!"
No definition from Jim, but one point for a correct guess.
doosra - n. - Armenian chickpea soup.
from Ranjit. David 2, Nicolas 2, Elliott 2 = 6 points and victory
Linda: "food. Judith?"
Elliott: "By far the most plausible of the non-Subcontinental defs."
doosra - n. - 1. An imported plant. 2. A waste of water.
from Nicolas. Jim 2 = 2 points
Linda: "waste, reminiscent of bagasse-related words"
Jim: "2 points for not having an obviously-subcontinental origin."
Elliott: "I'd want to see a little more etymology before committing to this one. "
doosra - n. - [Trinidadian dial.] - Hindu-language reggae.
from David. Eric 1, Jacob 1 = 2 points
Linda: "do they speak Hindi in Trinidad?"
Eric: "I imagine it would be "Hindi"-language, but it probably exists and I like the idea."
Jacob: "one vote and I want to hear some"
Elliott: "First of the Subcontinental defs. ``sr'' says ``India'' like ``sch'' says ``Germany''. I'll seize on it as a reason to eliminate defs."
doosra - n. - The wake left in a crowd by the passage of an elephant.
from Elliott. Ranjit 1, David 1, Eric 2 = 4 points
Linda: "space and perhaps waste?"
Eric: "After all, if we've had glip (the wake of a whale). . . . "
Jim: "The Elliott-whimsy is strong with this one! But no points."
Elliott: "Second Subcontinental def. "
doosra - n. - [fr. several S. Indian dialects] A menial servant, usually initially unskilled, who assists a more skilled servant with household tasks.
from Linda. Nicolas 1 = 1 point
Elliott: "Third Subcontinental def."
doosra - n. - [British Indian slang] A newcomer, a greenhorn. Derived from the habit of using cardamom sauce ("doosra") on all foods indiscriminately.
from Jacob. Linda 2 = 2 points
Linda: "Cardamom, yum!"
Jim: "I'd vote for this if the word 'greenhorn' weren't there -- it feels too slangy to be in a dictionary definition, even one of a slang term."
Elliott: "Fourth Subcontinental def."
doosra - n. - [fr. Turk. djusra, dead] The dirt and dead skin removed by the loofah glove (asindirmak) following the warm full body wash in a traditional Turkish bath.
from Eric. Ranjit 2, Linda 1, Jacob 2 = 5 points
Linda: "more waste, but one vote because I love loofahs."
Jacob: "two votes for plausible extra words"
Elliott: "Gross enough to vote for, but I'm not convinced that ``djusra'' looks Turkish."
doosra - n. - [fr. Ar. do osrah, the place of the children of Osrah (mythical Arabic city, one of the reputed sites of the Garden of Eden)] Fertile land; more generally, land that is not desert.
from Hutch. Elliott 1 = 1 point
Linda: "honorable mention because I was thinking of the Arabian Nights recently."
Elliott: "OK, this is pretty creative and well away from India."
doosra - n. - [fr. Urdu doosra, "(the) other (one)"] A particular type of delivery by an off-spin bowler in the sport of cricket. The doosra spins in the opposite direction to an off break (the off-spinner's default delivery), and aims to confuse the batsman into playing a poor shot.
from Wikipedia. Jim 1 = 1 point
Linda: "Isn't that a googly?" [Well, close, but not exactly. Wikipedia further explains, "The doosra is the off-spinner's equivalent of the leg-spinner's googly, which spins in the opposite direction to the leg spinner's stock ball."]
Elliott: "Fifth Subcontinental def."
